Welcome to the SolCom Swirls discussion forum.

This is the place to discuss our efforts in a previous game; what style we should play, and other game-related topics.

Since we cannot do anything specifically about each individual's skills or limitations, there is no room here to critizise individuals' efforts. Rather, I think we should focus on what we can do as a group to improve our play and still have fun doing it!

Go at it!

The Plucker's game
(Date Posted:04/12/2008 7:18 PM)

With a horrible 5 minutes' exception, I think we did very well against Plucker's. With the exception of skunkboy, I think we had that team pretty much under control, and was able to create our own chanses as well, evident from the two goals we scored.

After all the discussions among some last week about defense vs. offense, and how to sub in and out appropriately, it seemed that everybody stayed on task and concentrated on subbing for the approriate personnell. I am very happy about the defensive effort, but obviously with the plan we executed, the offense was going to suffer a little. but it seemed to me that everybody now knew well where they should be on the field.

What I think to focus on is to also capitalize more on the offensive opportunities in the situation that arise. for example, I think Shawn is very good at seeking the breakthrough as a striker, hovering at the offside line, and anticipating the pass that should come to him that would crack their defense wide open. We need to also recognize that, and be a little quicker at giving him that pass. The pass ideally should come just in front of him, in the sweet spot where he can run onto it and catch it before the goalie gets it. And I think we very shortly will be able to do it.

Just about all the goals we have scored have come after quick breakaways, where both the ball and several people at once move quickly up the field on one touch passing. That was the case with the Plucker's goal, as well as the first goal against Mix. We should seek those situations and pass as much as possible, as we cannot match the teams we are playing on pure individual skill just yet!

Joel had one of those situations happen to him, where he was able to strip the ball from skunkboy, and immediately ran the ball up field. That could very well have been a score.

I am very happy with the fact that in both the Mix game and the Plucker's game, we were able to play our attackers to one-on-one situations with the goalie, having gotten past the defense completely. As long as we continue doing that, I think we will start scoring a lot of goals!

I am also happy Aaron got to redeem himself by scoring twice (no matter what the ref says! That ball went in!)

The Poppy's game pregame speech
(Date Posted:04/12/2008 7:51 PM)

Poppy's has no weaknesses. They are a well rounded team that pride themseleves on accurate passing and ball distribution; working on ensuring people are always open. There is no point in marking one or two of their players, because all of them are good. So instead, we shoud just focus on our own play, and try going out in the 2-1-2-1 system before the break, and maybe fall back to a 3-1-2 system in the second half, as we always seem to run out of steam. also; just observe, enjoy and learn from how Poppy's seem to always have people open to pass to with their one touch passing.

They have one exceptional player, but he is not flashy, and instead uses his skills to enhance the rest of the team. Let's hope he lets us borrow the ball a few times, and when we do, we have to gun it and take care of the opportunities we do have.

Good luck!

RE:Welcome
(Date Posted:04/13/2008 7:31 AM)

I've suggested to Svein a couple of drills for practice that I would like to have.  Many of our forwards have played a lot of soccer and don't really need practice but I feel that the rest of us could use some.  Especially me.

One of my suggestions was that I and I'm sure others need practice in stripping the ball away.  For example, I need some time to just chase one of the forwards around and try to take the ball away.  I probably won't end up with the ball and I probably won't be able to keep up with them, but just the exercise of doing that will help me.

I think that if you feel we are under-skilled, one of the best things that you can do about that is to pitch in on a practice and help us improve.  The scrimmages are fine and still definitely needed, but with a practice we can focus more on specific skills that are needed.

I think we should schedule a practice for our week off for exactly that, plus some target practice. I do not believe that target practice will actually make you technically better, but it is a great mental booster to prove for yourself that you can in fact score.

The fundamental skill in the stripping exercise would be to have the feet react faster and more accurate to where the ball is. A great exercise to that, that would also build technique for all other aspects of the game, would be to find a wall, tree, or other solid object that won't give in, and kick the ball against it. It can be inside or outside, and in small quarters.

Poppy's post-game initial reaction
(Date Posted:04/13/2008 10:03 PM)

We rattled them. We got our offensive game to flow, and huslsled well in defense. The countinuation will only be more fun.

Feeding balls into the sweet spot between Shawn and the goalie also gave us ample rewards!

and now we can look forward to a break with a scrimmage before we play our friends in C, and coincidentally the only team we've beat so far, SoccerWorld

Poppy's game review
(Date Posted:04/13/2008 11:14 PM)

I thought we did pretty well tonight.  We were able to take advantage of their weaknesses.  I know it may have seemed like they didn't have too many, but where I felt they were weak was in their defense and goal keeping.  We were able to, at times, use our speed up front to get ahead of their back line.  We were also able to kick some low hard shots that their keeper was not able to control.  Our defense also played well.  They had some very skilled players that were up front and we stuck with them.  Their touch passes are nearly impossible to cover, but I thought we had good help from the sides to cut off their players that were making runs down the field.  While every one of us still has room for improvement, I think we have come a long way(and very quickly) since our first couple games in the first winter season.

RE:Welcome
(Date Posted:04/14/2008 12:05 AM)

I have been playing/watching the team since it has been formed and I am really excited and proud of how much everyone has improved. Not just in ball skills, but also in game strategy and game flow. Everytime we take the field we are all making improvements.

I am new to the game of soccer...or futball, I havent watched a game since about 1994. But since I have  started to play I have been recording and watching alot of games on Fox Soccer Channel. I am really starting to understand why they call it the "beautiful game". I look forward to playing some of the C league teams. It will be nice to play against some players that have as much experience as me.

I think we played a really well-rounded game against Poppies. We did really well in the attack (Shawn is my new hero). Our D was solid, Pat, Kristi, Anna and Lindsey are all really solid in D. Lindsey is a BEAST!!! I like that we were playing with intensity, but it started to get kind of sketchy there for a while. I would really like for our team to have a reputation of playing hard, but more importantly cleanly and with integrity.

I really need to work on my ball handling in traffic skills, so mabey we could spend 30 min before scrimmage to work on some kind of drills or position specific type of practice.
